# Atomic Mass Calculator

Top
The mass of an element or a molecule is know as atomic mass. Basically, the sum of the masses of protons and neutrons is atomic mass. The atomic  mass calculator determines the atomic mass of the compound. The atomic mass of the compound is calculated by adding the product of a number of mass and atomic weight of each element together.

## Steps

Step 1 : From the given question, put down the given compound and find the atomic weight of each element of the given compound.

Step 2 : To find the atomic  mass of the compound, use the given formula
Atomic mass = number of atoms $\times$ atomic weight of each element of the given compound.

Step 3 : Add the atomic mass of the each element to get the atomic mass of the given compound.

## Problems

Based on atomic mass, given below are some of the problems.

### Solved Examples

Question 1: Find the atomic mass of $C_{4}H_{10}$ (Butane).
Solution:

Step 1 : Given : $C_{4}H_{10}$
Number of atoms : C = 4 and H = 10
Atomic Weight : C = 12.0107 amu and H = 1.008 amu

Step 2 : Atomic mass of C = 4 $\times$ 12.0107 amu = 48.0428 amu
Atomic mass of H = 10 $\times$ 1.008 amu = 10.08 amu

Step 3 : Atomic mass of $C_{4}H_{10}$ = 48.04 amu + 10.08 amu = 58.12 amu.

Question 2: Find the atomic mass of $H_{2}CO_{3}$ (Carbonic Acid).

Solution:

Step 1 : Given : $H_{2}CO_{3}$
Number of atoms : H = 2 , C = 1  O = 3
Atomic Weight : H = 1.008 amu , C = 12.0107 amu and O = 16.00 amu

Step 2 : Atomic mass of H = 2 $\times$ 1.008 amu = 2.02 amu
Atomic mass of O = 3 $\times$ 16.00 amu = 48.00 amu

Step 3 : Atomic mass of $H_{2}CO_{3}$ = 2.02 amu + 12.01 amu + 48.00 amu = 62.02 amu.
